Trade Lane Africa: “There is always a way”

In view of the impressive economic growth in some emerging markets south of the Maghreb, Militzer & Münch is expanding its activities on the African continent. We asked Irene Pinkrah, Business Development Manager Trade Lane Greater Africa, about the special aspects of working with Africa, the challenges she and the team have to overcome, and what she likes best about her job.

Ms. Pinkrah, what are your tasks as Business Development Manager for Trade Lane Africa?

My main task is to expand and maintain business relationships with existing partners in Africa and to identify new partners for potential collaboration. I also build and maintain business relationships in Germany together with our sales team and take care of customer acquisition. And I also define marketing strategies and develop and optimize the trade lane between Germany and Africa by analyzing, planning and implementing efficient transport and logistics solutions.

How is the Militzer & Münch business developing in Africa?

We are currently in the process of developing the Sub-Sahara segment and are very optimistic. Africa has experienced significant economic growth in recent years and offers considerable development potential in some sectors. Militzer & Münch has been active in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria for many years, and is very successful in this field. We are therefore confident that we will also be successful in sub-Saharan Africa. Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria, for example, are very interesting for us.

We are currently working on establishing a partner network. Against this background, several Militzer & Münch country units, including Militzer & Münch Germany, joined the Airfreight Logistics Network for Africa (ALNA) some time ago, a strong network for airfreight to and from the African continent. With ALNA, we have access to a secure and reliable network of companies in many African countries.

In order to tap into the potential of the Ghanaian market for us, I will be attending the Supply Chain Business Forum and Exhibition in Ghana’s capital Accra this coming July. The trade fair will focus on current trends, challenges and opportunities in the supply chain sector. As Militzer & Münch is sponsoring the event, we also have the opportunity to present our products and services on site.

What are the main goods Militzer & Münch transports to and from Africa?

African countries import a variety of consumer goods, including electronics, vehicles, clothing and household appliances. The primary exports are raw materials as well as agricultural and pharmaceutical products.

What challenges have you experienced with transports to and from Africa?

Many parts of Africa have only insufficient transport infrastructure, both in terms of roads, railways and ports. This sometimes leads to bottlenecks, delays and increased transportation costs. In addition, different customs regulations, complicated documentation requirements and inefficient customs clearance procedures also complicate and delay transportation. Instability in some regions and cultural differences can also hinder transportation. But as long as we are prepared for these hurdles, there is always a way to overcome them. After all, challenging markets are our specialty.

What positions have you held at Militzer & Münch so far, and what do you like best about your work?

I have worked in operational positions in air and sea freight for over 20 years. Most recently, I worked in the export department of M&M air sea cargo GmbH in Frankfurt for 15 years. In 2022, I participated in our internal Talent Management Program, where one of our tasks was to identify promising new markets. We singled out Africa as one of the most interesting areas.

I really enjoy working for Militzer & Münch because the company is characterized by a family environment, motivated colleagues, openness and diversity. What I particularly like about my current position as Trade Lane Manager is that I can work independently. I can really make a difference here. The diverse challenges my job entails motivate me, too.

Militzer & Münch’s Pharma & Healthcare Logistics Services

Handling pharmaceutical products requires the highest levels of quality, hygiene and safety. In 2022, the German country organisation obtained the GDP (Good Distribution Practices) certificate, which authorises the transport of pharmaceuticals in accordance with EU standards. Our extensive expertise and commitment to the highest quality standards guarantee the safe handling of sensitive pharmaceutical products.

With GDP-compliant transport solutions and many years of experience in time-critical deliveries, we offer direct express deliveries, urgent air freight and on-board courier services for pharmaceuticals, raw materials, consumables, medical devices and spare parts. Thanks to the possibilities of live tracking, intensive cooperation with packaging manufacturers and transport companies as well as detailed lane risk assessments, we find the safest service solution for every transport and help to identify potential savings with smart logistics solutions.

Our commitment extends beyond conventional trade routes – we also deliver to niche markets and crisis areas. By working with local experts and complying with international quality standards, we ensure that urgently needed goods reach their destinations.

We focus on sustainable logistics: in addition to conventional transport routes by lorry or plane, we also use rail and reefer containers from our sister company InterRail for transport between Europe and Asia. In this way, we not only fulfil enhanced quality standards, but also offer environmentally friendly solutions.

We are on the road for our customers around the clock, 365 days a year, using all modes of transport worldwide.

Eichenzell and Marseille work together

A contribution by Lilli Macholdt, Julian Backenstoß and Geronimo Krebel

Eichenzell. When it comes to the Maghreb, both M&M Marseille and the German Road competence center in Eichenzell are pivotal. The cooperation goes hand in hand, especially with regard to transports to and from Tunisia and Algeria; it is essential and indispensable.

The M&M Marseille office is located in the municipality of Vitrolles in the immediate vicinity of the freight port and airport. With a monthly throughput of over 400 containers to the Maghreb, M&M sets a high benchmark. Every week, M&M Eichenzell loads an average of four to six groupage trailers to Tunisia, which leave the European Union via the ferry in Marseille. The colleagues in France then take care of customs clearance, ferry bookings and coordination with the shipping company, among other things.

30 containers a week

M&M Vitrolles plays a central role in transports to Algeria by acting as a hub for all shipments. The containers are also stowed on site before being shipped to Algeria at an average rate of around 30 containers per week. In 2023, Germany contributed 273 shipments and 1,971,700.00 kg.

As part of this cooperation, the valuable exchange of coordination and information took place on February 22, 2024 on site in Vitrolles, initiated by Julian Backenstoss, Lilli Macholdt and team leader of the German Maghreb team Geronimo Krebel. The agenda included topics such as operational processing, customs details, information flow within the two branches, Algerian sales and Maghreb marketing, which were discussed in detail with Jerome Dorel, Branch Manager, Sebastien Bibet, Business Development Manager Algeria, Nadja Bennamane, Team Leader Algeria, and Jerome Imperato, who is responsible for operations.

Despite the packed schedule, the team in Vitrolles was still able to arrange a tour of the port so that we could see the processes live on site, which we were very pleased about. A great way to round off our visit!

Strengthening the cooperation between Van Duuren and M&M

A contribution by Lilli Macholdt, Trade Lane Manager Maghreb and Deputy Manager of the Eichenzell branch

Stockstadt/Eichenzell. Collaborating and deepening cooperation with strategically important partners can be indispensable and beneficial for both parties. This is the case with companies and CargoLine members Van Duuren Districenters B.V. and M&M Militzer & Münch GmbH Road. The exchange was initiated by the respective Managing Directors Thomas Winter and Jeroen van Duuren.

Van Duuren has been a family-run company for generations, with its headquarters in Vianen, Netherlands, and dates back to 1892, the year it was founded. The company has a total of four offices in Vianen (NL), Schiphol Airport (NL), Cluj (RO) and Barcelona (ES), 100 direct and 150 indirect employees, 10,000 square meters of warehouse space, 175 own vehicles and handles a total of over 2,000 shipments per day. The focus is on European transports between the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, France and England. Van Duuren has been an official member of the CargoLine groupage network since 2020 – as has the M&M branch in Eichenzell.

There is already a cooperation via the general cargo network, and in order to get a closer look at the respective portfolio and to deepen the cooperation, a mutual personal visit took place. On November 1, 2023, we welcomed Sales Executive Matthijs Van Duuren to the M&M branches in Eichenzell and Stockstadt. In cooperation with the Trade Lane Managers and Markus Kubischok (Operations Director Overland), a comprehensive picture of M&M’s structures and strengths was conveyed.

On February 27, 2024, Lilli Macholdt and Jonas Enders paid a return visit to the headquarters in Vianen. Jonas Enders, who focuses on this topic in Eichenzell with the team management, was able to directly discuss further cooperation opportunities with regard to Western European transports.

In summary, it can be said that this exchange was a great enrichment for everyone involved and that closer cooperation will continue to be intensively pursued and implemented.

Donations instead of Christmas campaign

Hof, 31.01.2024. For years now, Militzer & Münch Germany has traditionally decided to forgo a Christmas campaign in favour of donations to various charitable organizations. This time, a total of EUR 5,500 went to Diakonie Hochfranken, the SySTEP daycare center in Schwarzenbach/Straßdorf and the MPS Gesellschaft Deutschland.

M&M Germany donated EUR 1,500 to the St. Elisabeth youth welfare center run by Diakonie Hochfranken. The young people cared for live together in different residential groups, experience affection and community and are supported in all life situations. The educational team provides the group residents with advice and support on all personal, family and everyday issues and helps them to establish new perspectives and positive experiences – the aim is to enable them to deal with past unfavorable experiences and developments so that they can face their future with greater strength. This also includes great shared experiences and leisure activities that enrich the children and young people and allow them to grow internally: during the summer vacations, for example, the residential groups go on vacation!

The SySTEP.de children’s day care center in Schwarzenbach/Straßdorf is an exceptional facility with a unique selling point. EUR 1,500 also went there.

It is probably the only “fire department daycare center” where regular activities are carried out with the fire department and the weekly forest day gives the children space and time to try things out and gain new experiences in different settings. The 20 girls and boys supervised there are allowed to go into the fire station, the fire engine or even hold the fire hose themselves. The enthusiasm of the kids and their shining eyes speak for themselves during such activities!

Another organization that is particularly close to Militzer & Münch Germany’s heart, the MPS (Gesellschaft für Mukopolysaccharidosen e.V.), received a donation of EUR 2,500.

Mucopolysaccharidoses, mucolipidoses and mannosidoses are rare, congenital metabolic diseases. Due to an enzyme defect – to put it simply – the “waste disposal” in the cells does not function properly. The constantly accumulating “waste” leads to steadily increasing, severe physical and mental problems. However, the diseases vary greatly in their progression – from relatively mild to very severe. Many patients do not grow up.

Rail as an alternative

Hamburg / Düsseldorf. The media are reporting on the current attacks in the Red Sea, and also on the fact that most shipping companies are avoiding the danger zone and routing their container ships from or to China via the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. This means significantly longer transit times and, especially for imports from China, drastically higher prices. We asked Dirk Bukowski, Director Sales, how the customers of the German M&M air sea cargo GmbH are dealing with the situation.

“We keep our customers constantly informed about the latest developments, and of course this is a point of discussion with our customers,” is the answer. “However, as all shipping companies are following suit, there is nothing we can do about it. The other issue is the longer delivery times. We are noticing that the order rhythms are shifting: Those who would otherwise have ordered at the end of February are already ordering today.” However, there is concrete help with regard to the long delivery time until the container can be unloaded thanks to the rail freight service to and from China.

We spoke to Michael Spitzlei, Düsseldorf, about this. “There have already been inquiries and initial bookings,” says the Head of Rail. In terms of time, rail transport definitely offers a considerable advantage: “Sea freight from China to Germany usually takes six weeks; now, with the new detour, the container takes eight weeks. Rail freight, for example Hamburg – Shanghai, takes 28 to 30 days. Rail freight is therefore normally ten days faster on average.”

We also ask what the prices are like.  “Rail is still more expensive than sea, even with the new sea freight rates. The Chinese railroads have quickly caught up. Switching to rail pays off for customers who are interested in shorter delivery times.”

Militzer & Münch intensifies presence in Africa

Militzer & Münch has been operating successfully in the markets of Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria for many years. In view of the impressive economic growth in some burgeoning markets south of the Maghreb, the company sees further potential and is therefore strengthening its commitment on the African continent. In this context, several M&M country units, including M&M Germany, recently joined the Airfreight Logistics Network for Africa (ALNA), a powerful network dedicated to airfreight to and from the African continent.

Holger Seehusen, Managing Director of M&M air sea cargo GmbH, Germany, and responsible for the global development of air and sea freight within the M&M Group Management, attended the 4th ALNA annual meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya, from October 8 to 11, 2023. It was the most successful meeting in ALNA’s history, with 180 participants from all over the world, including 60 from African countries.

“With ALNA, we have access to a secure and reliable network of companies in many African countries,” Holger Seehusen says. “This allows us to increase our turnover and further develop our Africa business. We also have the opportunity to receive shipments from the network and thus increase our volume.”

For the German M&M entity, Irene Pinkrah is to promote activities on the African continent; she was appointed Trade Lane Manager Africa (excluding Maghreb) on January 1, 2024. Born and raised in Ghana, Irene Pinkrah worked for renowned logistics companies in Germany and the USA before joining Militzer & Münch Frankfurt 15 years ago; she has extensive experience in air and sea freight.

Both the expansion of the network and the appointment of Irene Pinkrah underline Militzer & Münch’s commitment to sustainable development in Africa, and mark an important step towards strengthening the company’s presence on the African continent.

UPDATE Situation in the Red Sea

Dear customers, dear partners at home and abroad:

As already announced in our last newsletter, due to the continuing risk situation in the Red Sea, almost all container shipping lines are now redirecting their ships to the alternative route around the southern tip of Africa.

This essentially entails the following consequences for your shipments to and from Asia:

  • Depending on the port rotation and speed of the ocean-going vessel, the detour adds around 14 to 21 days to the transit time;
  • These delays are already causing significant shifts in the shipping companies’ schedules;
  • The delays and schedule disruptions have already led to a capacity shortage on the westbound route from Asia to Europe since the beginning of the year, which will become even more acute in the weeks leading up to Chinese New Year (from 10 February 24). For imports from Asia, we currently have to factor in a pre-booking time of two to three weeks, and the trend is rising;
  • In addition to the surcharges already introduced by the shipping lines to compensate for the longer route, westbound rates are rising rapidly due to the current ship utilization rate, and are now many times higher than the prices quoted at the beginning of December.

We are in constant dialog with all parties involved in the transport process and will of course keep you constantly informed about the status of your sea freight bookings and the progress of your shipments.

Due to the capacity and rate dynamics described above, we would like to ask you to contact us directly about your upcoming sea freight imports in the coming weeks. This way, we can offer you targeted solutions.

In this context, we would like to draw your attention once again to our Rail Service as an alternative to sea freight. Our team is available for bookings at relatively short notice. The transit time from / to China is currently approx. 18 – 21 days from terminal to terminal. We also regularly serve the routes to and from Vietnam, Korea, and Japan by rail, sometimes in combination with a short sea freight leg in Asia. Please do not hesitate to contact us!

Please contact us at any time with any questions you may have! In addition to your known local M&M contacts, our specialist departments are at your disposal as follows:

Shipping in the Red Sea under threat / Suez Canal avoidance on the route to and from Asia

Dear customers, dear partners at home and abroad:

As you have no doubt already heard from the media, there were a number of attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea over the past few days. Attacks on merchant ships by the Houthi rebels from Yemen are becoming an everyday occurrence in this trade lane.

In response, the majority of container shipping companies have decided to temporarily stop using the route via the Suez Canal. Until the Red Sea can be sailed safely again, vessels to and from Asia are going to take the alternative route around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.

We would therefore like to notify you in good time of the possible impact of this situation on your shipments:

  • Depending on the port rotation and speed of the ocean-going vessel, the detour will result in an approximately 14 to 21 days longer transit time.
  • We assume that these delays will cause significant shifts in shipping schedules in the coming weeks and months.
  • We also expect the shipping companies in this trade to introduce freight surcharges at very short notice in order to compensate for the longer route and the resulting higher fuel consumption. Carriers that continue to sail the Suez Canal despite the dangerous situation will incur drastically increased insurance premiums and pass these on in the form of a “War Risk Surcharge”.

We are in constant dialog with all parties involved in transport and will of course keep you informed of the status of your sea freight bookings and the progress of your shipments.

In this context, we would like to expressly draw your attention to our well-established Rail China Service as an alternative to ocean freight. Our rail team is at your disposal for short-term bookings; the transit time is currently approx. 18 – 21 days from terminal to terminal. For more information, please get in touch with us.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at any time! In addition to the local M&M representatives you know, our specialist departments are available to you as follows:

M&M – now also in Augsburg

Augsburg, December 18, 2023. The Maghreb countries, especially Morocco, are important trading partners for Germany; the number of shipments handled by the M&M Maghreb hub in Eichenzell is steadily increasing.

One reason to further expand activities: In February 2023, a satellite office of the Eichenzell branch was opened in Augsburg; from January 1, 2024, the office is to be run as an independent, German M&M branch under the leadership of Trade Lane Manager Maghreb Fourat Chetoui.

While the team in Eichenzell specializes in groupage transports, the focus in Augsburg is on direct freight business to and from the Maghreb, i.e. FTL/FCL transports to and from Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria.

Not just groupage freight

“We owe the positive development of our Maghreb transports to the groupage segment so far, but now we also want to strengthen our portfolio with direct loads,” says Managing Director Thomas Winter. “We are addressing a different clientele here: Augsburg is to accelerate the development even further by concentrating on direct loads; if necessary, we can turn Augsburg into a second Maghreb hub.”

The German M&M Road division, including Augsburg, is strongly positioned with 16 locations in Germany. Are there plans to add more? Says Managing Director Thomas Winter: “We are expanding the network where it seems sensible and profitable for us and our focus trade lanes.”

Our Active Role in Interest Groups: Holger Seehusen Joins the SLV Board

Frankfurt, 10th October 2023. M&M Militzer & Münch GmbH and M&M air sea cargo GmbH continue to pursue their proven strategy of actively participating in interest groups to promote the perception of corporate interests. The brand, Militzer & Münch, remains a well-known entity in the market even after 143 years.

Recently, the German subsidiary of M&M received significant recognition for its efforts. Holger Seehusen, Managing Director of M&M Deutschland, was appointed to the board of the Hessen/Rheinland-Pfalz Freight and Logistics Association (SLV) during their recent elections. This association represents 400 companies with a total of approximately 40,000 employees.

Daniel Hensel of Hensel Logistik assumed the role of Chairman of the Board, and the SLV board was further strengthened by competent members, including Christian Eichmeier of Contargo in Frankfurt, Michael Peters of Intertrans in Bobenheim-Roxheim, and Alexander Steinberg of Edgar Graß Spedition in Beselich.

“For us, it’s not just about raising awareness of our brand, but also about having our interests represented by the SLV in the market and in politics,” says Holger Seehusen.

New M&M Groupage Line between Germany and Serbia

Stuttgart/Belgrade, October 5, 2023 – In a close collaboration, M&M Germany and M&M Serbia are launching a new joint groupage line. Shipments will be collected at the German M&M Road HUB Stuttgart and will be picked up twice a week by M&M Serbia as per schedule.

In Serbia, Militzer & Münch has an excellent infrastructure, including its own fleet, impressive 36,000 square meters of warehouse space, and dedicated customs agencies for swift and seamless customs clearance. This enables comprehensive distribution within Serbia.

Furthermore, the M&M HUB in Belgrade serves as a central hub for onward transport to the neighboring countries of Montenegro and Bosnia & Herzegovina, providing customers with additional flexibility.

One of the features of this new groupage line is the guarantee of short transit times and a 24-hour distribution service within Serbia. This means that customers will receive their goods even faster and can flexibly adapt to changes in their supply chain needs.

For further information, please visit here: https://www.mumnet.de/de-en/new-service-germany-serbia

We look forward to assisting our customers in optimizing their logistics processes and enhancing the efficiency of their supply chains.

More warehousing space in Morocco

Militzer & Münch Morocco is expanding in Tangier: 2,000 square meters of additional warehouse space are to ensure faster handling.

The port city of Tangier is located at the northern tip of Morocco, close to the Strait of Gibraltar, barely 30 kilometers from the Spanish mainland, and thus at a strategically extremely important position for goods flows. For many years, the Tangier branch office has been Militzer & Münch’s gateway to Morocco.

At this time, Militzer & Münch Morocco is expanding its own warehouse with an annex: 2,000 square meters of additional logistics space will help meet the increasing customer demand and ensure the even faster handling of shipments: “At our location in Tangier, we have been recording steadily growing volumes for years”, explains Olivier Antoniotti, Managing Director of Militzer & Münch Morocco. “With the new warehouse, we can handle the additional transport volume even better and with more flexibility.”

In total, the warehouse area in Tangier will grow to 5,000 square meters. The inauguration and operational start-up of the new facility is scheduled for the beginning of January 2024.

Militzer & Münch Eichenzell: the gateway to the Maghreb

Most of the overland transports from the Militzer & Münch branch office in Eichenzell in Eastern Hesse are bound for one or more of the Maghreb countries. This makes Eichenzell one of the most important hubs for transports to Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco.

The small township near Fulda and Frankfurt is home to the German Militzer & Münch hub for the Maghreb – and it is continuously developing. Over the last few years, the branch has experienced steady and healthy growth. “We have a clear picture of the direction we want to take in the future,” says branch manager Julian Backenstoß. “We are receiving very positive feedback from our customers for our consistently good service. As a result, we’ve been able to expand our business and also increase our staff.” Close to twenty colleagues are now attending to the needs of customers. The attached warehousing area covers around 4,500 square meters.

Consolidated freight destined for North Africa
On average, eight to ten containers leave Eichenzell every week in a southerly direction to begin their journey to North Africa: four to five semitrailers per week head to Morocco via Algeciras in Spain. Another four to five round trips per week go to Tunisia via Marseille and Genoa. The focus is on consolidated freight.

The trucks need about six to seven days to make the journey to Algeria. Multimodal shipments are completed within nine to ten days. “If time is of the essence, customers prefer the pre-carriage by truck to Marseille. If transit time is not an issue, the combination with rail is a popular choice, also because it is cheaper. The customer can save a few hundred euros and at the same time do something for the environment,” explains Lilli Macholdt, Deputy Branch Manager and Trade Lane Manager Maghreb.

More than just the Maghreb
“We have a lot of experience in organizing and carrying out transports to the Maghreb countries,” explains Julian Backenstoß. “That’s why we keep expanding our activities and recently opened a branch office in Augsburg. There, under the management of Fourat Chetoui, Trade Lane Manager Maghreb, we are currently focusing on the direct freight business to and from the Maghreb. However, we also offer overland transports to many other destinations, of course.” In addition to transports to North Africa, Militzer & Münch also handles groupage transports to Azerbaijan via Eichenzell, as well as transports to Eastern and Western Europe. Moreover, the Eichenzell branch office has been the official CargoLine Germany depot for more than ten years, acting as a hub for classic groupage pre- and on-carriage to and from Europe or within Germany.”

Militzer & Münch Romania: Upswing and Optimism Despite Uncertain Times

Militzer & Münch has been present on the Romanian logistics market for almost 20 years with its own country unit. The focus is on imports and exports within Europe, with customers mainly from the industrial goods and clothing sectors. Despite current uncertainty factors, the subsidiary not only proves to be stable, but it can even report growth.

At the Romanian subsidiary, all signs point to expansion. And this although market conditions are currently rather challenging. The ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine, the energy crisis, and high inflation are creating uncertainty on the market and hardly allow any forecasts.

Teamwork to defy challenges

According to Managing Director Valentin Dragu, the fact that Militzer & Münch Romania is nevertheless so well positioned on the market is mainly due to the high degree of motivation and hard work of his team. “The logistics industry is very dynamic; you have to act flexibly and to be able to react to current market changes. I am very proud to say that we accomplish this even in difficult phases. As a medium-sized transport service provider, we are holding our own very well against the competition, and we are therefore generally optimistic about the future,” he says.

New location, new employees: for the roughly 30 employees of Militzer & Münch Romania, a move was due last fall; the M&M Romania team relocated to new, modern premises in downtown Bucharest. “Our current team members are happy with the new offices and the location’s very good transport connections, but hopefully also new team members in the future will appreciate this, as we are currently looking for reinforcement”, says Valentin Dragu.

Upswing in road and sea transport

So far this year, the current geopolitical and economic situation has had hardly any impact on Militzer & Münch Romania’s activities and results. The country unit recorded a slight decline in project business, though, the volume of road transports, however, increased, and in the sea freight sector, an upswing is noticeable, too.

Nevertheless, Valentin Dragu plans to focus Militzer & Münch Romania on transports that have proven successful for his company: “We expect trade within Europe to intensify next year, which will open up many opportunities for us. Therefore, we are now working on further expanding our transport business and trade relations in this direction – and hopefully soon with the vigorous support of new team members!”

“In the pharmaceutical sector, every day is a journey of discovery”

There is probably no other sector that imposes such high demands on the handling of goods as the pharmaceutical sector. Drugs and other medical products are particularly sensitive; even the smallest temperature fluctuation can impair their effectiveness and shelf life. The highest levels of quality, hygiene and safety are therefore crucial when handling pharmaceutical products – and logistics service providers who want to operate in the pharmaceutical sector have to prove that they meet the required EU standards as part of their GDP (Good Distribution Practices) certification.

Militzer & Münch Germany committed to achieving GDP certification in 2021 – with success: Last year, the country organization attained the certificate, with Charlotte Dürr, Group Project Manager Pharmaceuticals at Militzer & Münch, the leading force. We talked to her about the importance of the certification for the logistics provider, what opportunities it opens up, and about her personal passion for and further plans in the field of pharmaceutical logistics.

Ms. Dürr, the GDP certification is an important milestone for Militzer & Münch Germany. Would you please describe what this means for the national subsidiary and also for you personally?

First of all, one has to state that the certification process is very demanding and extensive. The hardest part was to create a basic framework of documentation and standards that covers all areas of the EU GDP directive. In addition, our carriers need to be thoroughly checked and assessed for their quality and compliance with the guidelines on their part.

With our quality system, we can ensure the responsible and competent handling of the sensitive goods – be it from Munich to Nairobi or from Berlin to Ulaanbaatar. This helps us now to continuously certify further locations of the group, as with the successful GDP certification of Militzer & Münch Germany, we have also aroused interest in other country units. As a result, we have a great working group of local GDP managers, sales experts, and quality managers. In Poland, we successfully passed the certification audit in March; in Georgia, we are currently planning the first audit.

Many country organizations already have experience in the various product categories and see great growth potential, especially in Southeastern Europe and Central Asia. The healthcare sector is of great importance for the entire Militzer & Münch Group, and developing this product opens up a whole range of new opportunities for us.

What exactly are the new opportunities for Militzer & Münch Germany that result from the certification?

Worldwide, the healthcare market is booming, and Germany is one of the market leaders. As a GDP-certified logistics service provider, we can now participate in this sector to a wholly different extent, open up new markets, and address a larger clientele.

The first sales initiatives we launched after successful certification showed quick results: We received many requests for quotations both for full truck loads by road, including numerous shipments to Central Asia and as far as Mongolia, and by sea and air to various destinations in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, as well as for imports from America. Within the Militzer & Münch Group, M&M air sea cargo GmbH is responsible for GDP compliant transports by air and sea freight, as well as by rail.

Moreover, we can support the medical supply of many war and crisis areas while maintaining quality standards. There is also great interest in refrigerated transports by rail. Here, we benefit above all from an increased interest in reducing emissions.

Can you give us some examples of projects that Militzer & Münch Germany is already handling in the pharmaceutical sector?

At this time, we are handling transports of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment to Africa, Asia, and Europe, as well as shipments within Europe. In addition, we have imports of raw materials, accessories and medical cannabis. The high level of customer demand indicates that certification was exactly the right step to take. We are convinced that it will enable us to significantly expand our activities in the field of pharmaceutical logistics, and we are looking forward to intensifying our cooperation with other Militzer & Münch country units in cross-border transports of pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

With your dedication and commitment, you have been instrumental in driving the pharma project forward. Where does your enthusiasm for this area in particular come from?

After my qualification as a forwarding specialist and subsequent studies in International Transport Management and Marketing, I started at Militzer & Münch in 2018, initially as Sales Coordinator, but then took over product responsibility for Aviation Logistics. With the onset of the pandemic, I was looking for a new task and started to develop the Pharma Logistics division – a decision I have not regretted to this day! The products with their specific requirements and transport conditions are certainly a challenge, but the market is absolutely viable, and working in this field is a journey of discovery for me every day, due to the wide variety of products and customers. And by the way, I have probably always had a penchant for special products: in my bachelor thesis, I devised a strategic market analysis for the transport of horses by air.

What are your plans for the future?

We want to further expand our pharmaceutical logistics network so we can offer our customers worldwide the best possible service and products. Where this is not feasible via our own Militzer & Münch network, we cooperate with local partners who, of course, have to meet our requirements and also the GDP standards. The search for such partners, which is not easy in every country, is currently one of our most important tasks.

We want to further expand our pharmaceutical logistics network so we can offer our customers worldwide the best possible service and products. Where this is not feasible via our own Militzer & Münch network, we cooperate with local partners who, of course, have to meet our requirements and GDP standards as well. The search for such partners, which is not easy in every country, is currently one of our most important tasks.

We generally see great potential in pharmaceutical shipments to Central Asia, as well as to Southeastern Europe and Africa. In Central Asia and Southeastern Europe, we are already operating our own organization in almost every country. And in East and West Africa, for example, we have just successfully found reliable partners. For our activities in the region, I benefit from participating in the Militzer & Münch Talent Development Programme in 2022: As an international team, we had the opportunity to analyze new markets – and with Africa, the focus was on a market that is now emerging as one of our core markets for pharmaceutical transports.

New Leadership at Militzer & Münch in Germany

St. Gallen, 16 January 2023. The Militzer & Münch Group has completed the restructuring of its business activities in Germany. Since January 1, 2023, Holger Seehusen, Thomas Winter, and Viola Rockelmann have been heading both M&M Militzer & Münch Deutsche Holding GmbH and the two operating units, M&M air sea cargo GmbH and M&M Militzer & Münch GmbH. Thus, all Militzer & Münch units in Germany are now under the one management.

Viola Rockelmann, hitherto Finance Director of M&M Militzer & Münch Deutsche Holding GmbH, has been appointed Managing Director and forms, together with Holger Seehusen and Thomas Winter, the management team of Militzer & Münch in Germany. In addition to their previous management positions at the operational units, Holger Seehusen and Thomas Winter have been appointed to the management team of the German holding company. The distribution of responsibilities within the management team remains unchanged: Holger Seehusen focuses on air and sea freight activities, including rail transports on the China – Europe route, Thomas Winter is mainly responsible for road freight transports, and Viola Rockelmann for finance and administration.

The previous managing directors of M&M Militzer & Münch Deutsche Holding GmbH, Alexei Kovalenko, CFO of the Militzer & Münch group and spokesman of the Group Management, and TransInvest board member Ingo Seifert, are stepping down from their management positions at the German holding company. Their other functions remain unchanged.

“We wish Viola Rockelmann, Holger Seehusen and Thomas Winter all the best for their new tasks,” says Alexei Kovalenko. “Our country unit in Germany has shown very positive development over the past years; it is an important pillar of the Militzer & Münch Group. With the new management structure, we now have a leaner setup in Germany and can act more dynamically to even better meet the future challenges of the logistics sector.”

Viola Rockelmann holds a degree in business administration and has been with Militzer & Münch for 27 years. Holger Seehusen previously held management positions at IHG Logistics GmbH & Co KG and Rhenus Logistics. He has 30 years of experience in the logistics industry. Thomas Winter has been active in the logistics industry for over 25 years; among others, he was with DHL Freight and Emons Spedition GmbH.

A strong location of high potential

Whether capacities, energy prices or personnel costs: for the airfreight industry, the Corona pandemic was not without consequences. At present, it is still virtually impossible to make any long-term plans. In times of uncertainty, however, there are also some constants – like Frankfurt Airport, which has maintained its strong position as a major cargo hub in Central Europe for many companies. Including for Militzer & Münch.

M&M air sea cargo GmbH has an office directly at Cargo City South, Frankfurt Airport, where 15 employees work to serve customers; and the service goes far beyond standard freight: the team primarily handles dangerous goods shipments, valuable cargo and GDP (Good Distribution Practice) compliant transports for pharmaceuticals, which are subject to specific requirements, for instance with regard to refrigeration.

Santino Hormuth has been working in the logistics industry for 15 years and has been managing the branch of M&M air sea cargo GmbH at Frankfurt Airport for just over a year. Transports according to GDP guidelines have characterized his work from the very beginning, as immediately after he joined the company, certifications in the GDP area were already taking place. “That was rather challenging for me – after all, I was familiarizing myself with the internal structures, the work processes, and my colleagues at the same time,” he recounts. “Not least thanks to the excellent cooperation on the team, we passed the certifications successfully and have since been working on boosting GDP transports as a product in our portfolio and expanding our customer base in this area.”

Special, in many ways

In 2021, the air freight volume at Frankfurt Airport was around 2.3 million tons, the highest amount of cargo handled at any German airport. Europe-wide, Frankfurt Airport is one of the ten largest airports.

Santino Hormuth appreciates his workplace and is aware of its importance: “Frankfurt Airport is a magnet for companies, an important location for science and education, and one of the biggest workplaces in Germany. It is also the Lufthansa home base and the leading cargo hub in Europe. This gives the airport a very special position also for Militzer & Münch,” he explains. “Moreover, our location directly at the airport is definitely of competitive advantage for us: we are virtually in the middle of the action, and can act fast.”

Speed is the order of the day

Speed plays a crucial role in the handling of air freight projects. In most cases, orders are urgent and need to be handled efficiently and swiftly. In this respect, Militzer & Münch benefits from its decades of experience and presence on the market, as well as from well-practiced teams. This allows for short decision-making paths with a minimum of bureaucracy – and that way, even particularly urgent transports become routine tasks. Santino Hormuth’s team regularly handles just-in-time shipments for automotive suppliers, transports engines and other parts for the air freight industry, and was recently responsible for the transport of equipment for the World Cup in Qatar from Frankfurt to Doha.

Santino Hormuth’s goal for 2023 is to further increase Militzer & Münch’s freight volume at Frankfurt Airport, the number of key accounts, and of existing customers. To this end, among other things, there are plans to restructure the sales department.

“We are still facing tense times. But in my year so far with Militzer & Münch, I have experienced how informal and at the same time professional the cooperation is here at the Frankfurt site and across all branches. Therefore, I am sure that we will successfully master this phase.”
